Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral from my GP to see a counsellor?
No referral is required to see a counsellor. If you choose to bring one, it can provide additional information which may form part of the plan to support however it is not a requirement.
How long do sessions go for?
The amount of time allocated to your appointment is 60 minutes. Longer sessions are available on a pro-rata basis.
How many sessions will I need?
Upon your first appointment your counsellor will discuss any recommendations they have with you regarding treatment duration, strategies and goals. Overall however, counsellors will be guided by you, your goals and financial situation. You do not need to commit to a certain number of sessions upfront.
How often should I be attending?
This is determined on a case-by-case basis however it is loosely suggested to attend more regularly at the commencement of a counselling treatment episode to build therapeutic rapport and work toward goals. From there you could consider spacing sessions out (fortnightly/monthly/6-weekly) as a maintenance depending on your needs. We have clients who attend weekly, and clients who attend every 6 months – we are flexible to your needs.
Who is advised of my attendance to counselling?
Counselling is a confidential process. Counsellors are bound by both ethical and legislative regulation around this. There are rare occasions where mandatory reporting is required such as if you disclose immediate harm to yourself or someone else, or if there are safety concerns in relation to a child. Should these concerns arise in session, your counsellor will discuss their obligations transparently.
